About the Championships

The first Singapore Pipe Band Championship made its debut in 2008 mainly to cater to the local Pipe Bands that could actually compete under international guidelines but were prevented from doing so as other regional ‘events’ were either cancelled, were too costly or sank into utter redundancy. Singaporean students were being disadvantaged by not being ‘stretched’ and by not fulfilling their co-curricular requirements.

Encouraged by SJI’s principal, magnanimously sponsored by the then Irish Business Association and St Patrick’s Society and with a wee shoe-string budget for the contest proper (masking tape for the competition circle!), it was decided to start something in Singapore to address this. Right from the onset, the vision was to create a fully-graded full Pipe Band competition. To our pleasant surprise, bands from around the region got wind of our competition and started entering to compete.

Presently, Singapore & Southeast Asian Pipe Band Championships welcomes bands and soloists from Thailand and Hong Kong as well as observers from Japan and Malaysia. Our dream is to further develop the Championship to include one and all in a weekend of fun and friendly competition.
